In March 2020, the RCS England COVID Research Group was established. The purpose of the group was to bring together COVID-specific research projects supported by the College, to share ideas, promote collaboration, and to support COVID research activity across the UK.
The COVID Research group aimed to assist in study design and recruitment, and help research group members identify funding opportunities for their research work.
In addition to surgery specific projects, the group endorsed and supported the three high profile national studies identified in the letter from the Chief Medical Officers.
The huge number of COVID surgery research projects taken forward by members of the group are listed on our dedicated RCS England COVID Research Group webpage.
This working group brings together the COVID-specific projects supported by the College, in order to share ideas, collaborate and support the research activity being carried out. The group aims include assisting in study design and recruitment, and the identification of funding opportunities. More information and a full list of the projects that comprise the research group can be found here.
From COVID Research to COVID Recovery Research
With many of the UK’s COVID restrictions lifted from 24 February 2022, we are changing the focus of the COVID Research Group to support research that assists surgery to recover from the impact of COVID. The group will be renamed the COVID Recovery Research Group and will exist from 3 March 2022 until 30 June 2023, at which point its ongoing purpose, activity and impact will be reviewed.
The RCS England Research Group worked to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on surgical patients and practice. The RCS England COVID Recovery Research Group aims to address to the next stage of the pandemic, specifically the recovery of surgical services.
